  1. Any action and activity that can be used to prevent or eliminate a water safety hazard or reduce it to an acceptable level (WHO 2007, WHO/IWA 2009).

Explanation

Control measures are activities or processes applied to a system to prevent a hazard occurring. Such measures are applied at control points, which are steps at which control can be applied to prevent or eliminate a water safety hazard or reduce it to an acceptable level. Some plans contain key control points; that is, points at which control is essential to prevent or eliminate a hazard (WHO 2007).

Example

"Preventive and control measures follow the same procedures identified for other buildings; for example, they involve removing dead and blind ends, maintaining elevated temperatures in the hot-water system, and periodic disinfection and permanent chlorination of the cold-water system." (WHO 2007).
