  1. A combined sewer is a sewer which carries storm water, rainwater, waste water and sewerage (American Society of Sanitary Engineering 2007).
  2. A building sewer that conveys both sewage and storm water or other drainage (WHO 2006).

Explanation

A combined sewer is a sewer drainage system which must be graded and sized to carry its estimated peak hydraulic storm loads. It uses the venting requirements normally associated with a sewer drain (World Plumbing Council Working Group 2008).

Example

Combined sewers are not permitted in many jurisdictions. Normally storm water and sewerage are separated where sewerage is transported for treatment to a treatment plant and storm water discharged to a storm water drain system. The combination of sewerage and storm water discharge generates a high operational and environmental cost due to the volume of waste water to be treated and runs the risk of overflow and untreated discharge during storm periods (World Plumbing Council Working Group 2008).
